1. What material is best for processing highly abrasive polymers like glass-filled Nylon or fluoropolymers?
For highly abrasive polymers, standard nitrided steel (like 38CrMoAlA) can wear out quickly. We recommend utilizing a Bimetallic Screw paired with a Bimetallic Barrel. The screw flights are welded with a cobalt-based or nickel-based alloy containing up to 40% tungsten carbide particles, while the barrel is lined with a high-nickel, high-chromium alloy. This combination increases wear resistance up to five times compared to standard gas-nitriding processes.
2. How does the screw's L/D (Length to Diameter) ratio affect polymer processing?
The L/D ratio determines the plasticizing path length of the polymer. A standard 28:1 L/D ratio is common for basic materials, but for modern engineering plastics (like high-temperature polyamides or multi-layer co-extrusion runs), L/D ratios of 30:1 or 32:1 are used. 4. What is the role of barrier flights on a high-speed extrusion screw?
Barrier flights separate the solid polymer bed from the melted pool inside the screw channel. Melted polymer flows over the flight into a separate channel, preventing solid particles from flowing downstream too early. This ensures only fully plasticized polymer enters the mixing zone, improving thermal homogeneity and preventing structural flaws in the finished profile.
5. What downstream equipment is needed for automated medical and industrial tubing?
